Fire razes four shoplots in Penang's Jalan Perak

GEORGE TOWN: An afternoon fire gutted 16 premises along Jalan Perak here.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis stated that four four-storey shoplots were destroyed in the Thursday (July 2) afternoon fire, resulting in damage to 16 units.

"Ten of 16 premises had 90% damage, including a coffee shop.

"We had about 60 personnel, including members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, involved in the firefighting operation.

"The rescue team managed to bring out a man trapped on the second floor. The man was not injured and there were no casualties," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 2).

John said firefighters also faced difficulties containing the blaze at a shop selling prayer items because of the large quantity of goods stored inside.

"The heavy smoke generated by the burning stock slowed down firefighting operations," he said.

The Penang Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call at 12.33pm.

The fire was completely put out at 6.33pm with overhaul works still being carried out.

Initial reports indicated the fire started in two premises before spreading to other adjoining units.
