KUCHING: Rumah Sarawak, a heritage building at Jalan Taman Budaya here, will be developed into the headquarters of the Sarawak Arts Council, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said the state Cabinet had approved the use of the building and its surrounding for the council.
"It's an appropriate location, not only because Rumah Sarawak is a heritage building but because it's surrounded by nature near Reservoir Park.
"This will provide inspiration to our creative arts community," he said at the council's media gathering here on Tuesday (June 30).
Abdul Karim said temporary premises will be arranged for the council while Rumah Sarawak is renovated.
"We have identified a place which we will refer to the Cabinet for approval," he said.
Abdul Karim said the council played an important role in preserving and developing Sarawak's diverse culture and heritage.
He said concrete efforts were needed to keep traditional arts and culture alive.
"Sarawak has 34 indigenous groups, each with its own culture and heritage.
"We must make sure the arts and culture of all groups are preserved and passed down to future generations," he said.
Meanwhile, the council's chief executive officer Dr Suffian Jalet said the council recently introduced a new logo reflecting its aspiration to become a world-class arts council.
He said the council was also launching a calender of events listing its programmes and activities for the year.
These include arts and dance festivals, concerts, workshops and an arts practicum.
Moving forward, Suffian said the council planned to develop a digital platform as a reference hub for Sarawak's arts and culture.
"This will facilitate access to information about arts and culture in Sarawak," he said.
