Nine stalls, vehicles destroyed in Sandakan fire

SANDAKAN: Nine roadside stalls and several vehicles were destroyed in a fire that swept through Kampung Pening Lalat in Karamunting here on Saturday (June 27).

The blaze, which broke out at 11.43am, engulfed a row of nine semi-permanent stalls measuring about 80ft by 200ft.

Three vehicles and a motorcycle were also destroyed in the fire.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

A spokesman for the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said firefighters from the Sandakan station were dispatched to the scene, about 15km away, and arrived at 11.58am.

"The fire involved nine semi-permanent stalls and was estimated to have damaged about 80% of the structures.

"The operation was brought under control at 12.05pm," he said in a statement.

A total of 16 firefighters, assisted by three fire engines, were involved in the operation.

Firefighters used two water jets and water from a nearby hydrant to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to surrounding areas.

The cause of the fire and the amount of losses have yet to be determined.
