IPOH: The police officer killed in Thursday's (June 25) accident in Lenggong is believed to have lost control of his vehicle while overtaking another, police say.
Gerik OCPD Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman said the 41-year-old police officer was en route from Gerik to Kuala Kangsar prior to the incident at about 5pm.
"The car is believed to have lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle and crashed head on with a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that was driven by a 44-year-old female teacher," Supt Abdul Samad said.
"The police officer was seriously injured and was pronounced dead on the spot," he said in a statement on Friday (June 26).
"In the MPV, there were five other female teachers, aged between 29 and 55," he added.
"A teacher seated in the backseat was also killed while receiving treatment at the location," Supt Abdul Samad said.
It was reported that the accident occurred near a popular restaurant in Lenggong.
According to the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, the deceased were identified as Zuraida Abu Bakar, 47, a lecturer at the Gerik Vocational College, and Melvindar Singh Gamum Singh, a prosecuting officer from the Pengkalan Hulu district police.
Supt Abdul Samad said the deceased have been brought to the Gerik Hospital for further action.
"Those injured were brought to the Lenggong Health Clinic and Kuala Kangsar Hospital for further treatment," he said.
He added that the case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.
"The police advise all road users to always be careful and adhere to traffic rules to maintain safety and prevent accidents," he said.
