INTERACTIVE: What you need to know about Johor’s 56 state seats

PETALING JAYA: The stage is set for election hopefuls in Johor, as they throw their hats into the ring on nomination day tomorrow (June 27).

These candidates will be fighting for a total of 56 state seats, and will attempt to win the hearts of over 2.7 million voters in Johor.

The Election Commission has set July 11 as polling day, while early voting will be held on July 7.

Until then, here’s a look at some key insights into Johor’s constituencies and some interesting facts on the state’s incumbents.

Among the 56 state seats, Kota Iskandar is the largest seat with the highest number of eligible voters.

With 116,415 residents aged 18 and above, it tops the list as the constituency with the biggest eligible voter base in Johor.

Meanwhile, Johor’s most aged constituency is Pemanis, where nearly 17% of residents are aged 65 and above.

But when it comes to land area, Tenggaroh is the biggest seat - the constituency spans 1,745 square kilometres, with a population density of 27 people for every square kilometre.

Overall, Johor’s total population came up to 4.2 million, based on population estimates as of 2025 by the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

Of the total, 2.25 million residents were male while 1.95 million were female.

Bumiputra communities made up the majority or 61.2% of the state’s population, followed by the Chinese (31.8%), Indians (6.5%) and other ethnicities (0.5%).

As the Johor polls are expected to be an intense fight, a question that lingers is which incumbent will successfully defend their seat this round.

Among the current Johor assemblymen, here are those who won with the biggest majority of votes during the last elections in 2022:

There are also some assemblymen who have steadily been winning consecutive polls over the years, making them long serving incumbents.

Semarang assemblyman Datuk Samsolbari Jamali has emerged as the longest serving incumbent, according to data from ElectionData.MY.

The Umno politician, who is also the Johor state assembly deputy speaker, has had the longest winning streak - he won five state polls in a row since 2004.

Political parties have expressed their intention to field more women in the coming polls, but females only made up less than 30% of the candidates in the last state election.

The party which fielded the largest number of female candidates was Umno, with nine women contesting in the previous polls.

However, this only made up 24.3% of its total 37 candidates.

Muda, while fielding only two women, had the biggest percentage of females out of its total seven election candidates.
