PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across 10 states and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, effective until 4pm on Wednesday (June 24).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire states of Pulau Pinang and Perak. In Kedah, the affected areas include Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baru.
On the east coast, severe weather is expected in Jeli and Kuala Krai in Kelantan, alongside Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun in Terengganu. Pahang will also see storms in Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Jerantut, Maran, Kuantan and Rompin.
In the central and southern parts of the peninsula, the warning covers Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak and Petaling in Selangor, as well as Kuala Lumpur.
Further south, affected areas include Jelebu, Seremban, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jempol and Tampin in Negeri Sembilan, the entire state of Melaka, and several districts in Johor, namely Segamat, Batu Pahat, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 1pm on Wednesday.
