KAMPAR: The case of a 44-year-old man accused of driving under the influence of drugs, resulting in an accident that killed a 10-year-old boy has been fixed for July 24.
Kampar Magistrate’s Court judge Noor Azreen Liana Mohd Darus set the date for the prosecution to submit additional documents, including the post-mortem, chemistry and Puspakom report.
The accused, S. Yogeswaren, a debt-collector, was represented by lawyer Keshvinder Singh, while the prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Nur A’Aina Farhana Meor Amir Hamzah.
According to the charge sheet, Yogeswaren allegedly committed the offence at KM29.4 of Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur in Kampar at about 9.20pm on May 1.
He is accused of driving a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle while under the influence of drugs and being incapable of properly controlling the vehicle, resulting in the death of 10-year-old Jayden Leong Zhi Yung.
He was charged under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act, which carries a jail term of between 10 and 15 years and a fine of between RM50,000 and RM100,000 upon conviction.
It was previously reported that a 4WD vehicle driver, who was travelling from Ipoh towards Kampar, allegedly lost control and veered into the opposite lane before colliding with two cars.
The driver had later tested positive for drugs.
Leong sustained severe head and leg injuries and was pronounced dead on the spot.
