KL's 10,000 CCTV cameras an effective tool to support law enforcement, efficiency, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The installation of 10,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across Kuala Lumpur since 2020 has significantly enhanced police investigations and operational efficiency, says Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail.

The Inspector-General of Police said the extensive CCTV network has proven to be an effective tool in supporting law enforcement efforts, particularly as the police force continues to leverage technology to improve public safety.

"Human resources within the force are limited, but with advancements in technology, we are able to identify incidents more effectively and support policing operations," he told reporters after the Combat Scam programme on Monday (June 15).

Mohd Khalid said the police would continue to strengthen the use of information technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance investigations and operational capabilities.

"That is why I always encourage the force to further improve and streamline the use of IT and AI," he said.

He added that technology-driven initiatives such as the CCTV system have indirectly assisted the police in solving cases and carrying out their duties more efficiently over time.

In April, it was reported that RM500mil had been spent on the installation and operation of an integrated network of 10,000 CCTV cameras across the capital since 2020.

The initiative was implemented jointly by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the police as part of efforts to strengthen security monitoring in the city.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh had said the CCTV network was crucial in enhancing safety and security in Kuala Lumpur.

The cameras have been installed and integrated at strategic locations, including major roads, intersections, public areas and commercial centres.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud had also said that the system is equipped with advanced features such as geo-fencing technology, facial recognition capabilities, behavioural analytics and an integrated public announcement system.
