Over 3.6 million voters to decide state governments


PUTRAJAYA: More than 3.6 million voters in Johor and Negri Sembilan will head to the elections after the Election Commission (EC) set July 11 and Aug 1 respectively as polling days in the two states.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said nominations for the Johor state elections will take place on June 27 with early voting on July 7.

As for Negri Sembilan, nominations are on July 18 with early voting on July 28.

He said the campaign period for the Johor polls will last 14 days from June 27 until 11.59pm on July 10.

For the Negri Sembilan polls, the campaign period begins from July 18 until 11.59pm on July 31.

He said postal vote applications for the Johor polls opened on June 5, while the postal vote applications for the Negri Sembilan polls opened yesterday.

On implementation costs, Ramlan said the 16th Johor state election is estimated to require an allocation of RM86.8mil, while that of Negri Sembilan will involve RM80.6mil.

“As of May 31, there are 2,727,926 registered voters in Johor comprising 2,703,175 regular voters, 12,041 army personnel and their spouses and 12,710 police personnel and their spouses.

“There are 889,490 registered voters in Negri Sembilan, comprising 867,151 regular voters, 16,884 army personnel and their spouses and 5,455 police personnel and their spouses,” he said yesterday.

Voters can seek information on their polling centres, voting streams and numbers beginning June 23 by visiting https://mysprsemak.spr.gov.my portal, contacting the EC hotline at 03-8892 7218 or through the MySPR Semak mobile applications.

Ramlan urged aspiring candidates to complete and check their candidacy forms with officials prior to nomination day.

“Candidates are also encouraged to make deposit payments in advance to ensure the nomination process runs smoothly.

“However, the completed and checked nomination papers can only be presented by either the candidate, proposer or seconder on nomination day at the designated nomination centre,” he said.

There will be 56 nomination centres for the Johor polls and eight centres for the Negri Sembilan polls.

A total of 42,971 election workers will be appointed for the Johor polls, with 1,076 regular voting centres established. There will also be 64 early voting centres.

A total of 15,344 election workers will be appointed for the Negri Sembilan polls, with 401 regular voting centres established alongside 38 early voting centres.
