Johor cops hunting for three foreigners who allegedly assaulted Grab driver


JOHOR BARU: Police are tracking down three foreigners who allegedly attacked a 56-year-old Grab driver several days ago.

Caretaker exco member Ling Tian Soon, who visited Goh Kong Meng here to present some aid, hoped that the suspects would be apprehended soon.

“This man was violently attacked after a misunderstanding occurred when he asked the three men to fasten their seat belts in his vehicle,” he said, adding that the suspects, believed to be intoxicated, assaulted the victim barehanded.

Ling, who is the caretaker state health and environment committee chairman, also urged the e-hailing company to review their standard operating procedures (SOP) to provide better protection for their drivers.

“We know that Grab already protects their customers. Now perhaps they could review the SOP for drivers,” he said, adding that he visited the victim together with members from the association of gig economy.

He said that MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had also spoken to the victim via a video call during the 11.15am visit to his home in Taman Nusa Bestari in Skudai.

Posts of the attack have gone viral with many calling for the suspects to be quickly apprehended.

Meanwhile, Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M.Kumarasan confirmed receiving a report and that police were tracking down the suspects.

He added that the incident occurred about 9.30pm on Tuesday (June 9) in Taman Tan Sri Yaakob in Skudai.

“The victim was attacked as the suspects were believed to be unhappy with him reminding them not to make too much noise in the vehicle,” he said, adding that the victim lodged a report at about 11.09am the next day.

He said investigations were underway under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
