Perlis PAS to keep backing Bersatu despite national split

KANGAR: Despite the end of PAS and Bersatu’s political cooperation on the national level, Perlis PAS said it will continue supporting Bersatu in the state.

Perlis Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the state government is functioning as usual and would continue doing so until Perikatan decides on the matter, reported Sinar Harian.

“As we have been informed, PAS made several decisions on Monday (June 8), including terminating its political cooperation with Bersatu, exploring a form of political understanding for electoral cooperation, unity and Muslim unity.

“However, in Perlis, the government is under Perikatan, where the majority of seats are held by PAS, and PAS supports Bersatu in Perlis.

“Until Perikatan makes any decisions, the state government’s priority is the welfare of the people," he said on Wednesday (June 10).

Shahidan, who is also Perlis PAS deputy commissioner III, added that efforts to assist the people would continue despite changes in political relations at the national level.

On Monday night, PAS announced that its political cooperation with Bersatu would end with immediate effect following a special meeting of the PAS central working committee, which took into account reports, studies and current assessments of relations between the two parties.

Following the decision, PAS said it would explore new forms of political understanding and electoral cooperation in the interest of Muslim unity ahead of the state elections and the 16th General Election.

PAS and Bersatu have been the two main components of Perikatan since 2020, before Gerakan joined the coalition in February 2021.
