Jobless man remanded four days over theft at Alor Gajah mosque

ALOR GAJAH: A 28-year-old unemployed man has been remanded for four days until Friday (June 12) over the theft of a handbag at a mosque in Kampung Jelatang here.

Sessions judge Kamarul Aris Kamalluddin issued the remand order at the Alor Gajah Court Complex on Tuesday (June 9) to facilitate police investigations.

Police are investigating the case under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building.

It was reported on Monday (June 8) that police were tracking down a man after a CCTV recording from the mosque went viral on social media.

The footage showed a suspect in a T-shirt and shorts making off with a handbag belonging to a woman who was in the women's prayer area.

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Ahmad Abu Bakar was quoted as saying that police received a report on the incident at 6.24pm from the victim, a 19-year-old university student.

Earlier reports stated that police were searching for the suspect after a 23-second CCTV recording surfaced online, showing the man allegedly stealing the handbag while the victim was praying.

The suspect was detained later on Monday.
