PUTRAJAYA: Ministries and government agencies must act together quickly to curb illegal business involving foreigners and misuse of local business licences, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister urged the authorities to take immediate action against foreigners allegedly conducting business activities using tourist or student visas, as well as the abuse of permits and licences issued to Malaysians.
“In Cabinet meetings over the past few months, we have raised concerns about groups entering the country as visitors, on visas or short-term visits, but taking the opportunity to engage in business activities.
“The problem has now increased significantly. Many of those are coming from China, aside from India and Indonesia, who are entering on tourist visas, but not for tourism.
“They are operating small businesses, including car workshops, air-conditioning services, small companies and coffee shops,” he said during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly on Monday (June 8).
Anwar said legitimate businesses must be properly registered and operate legally, warning that some foreigners were allegedly using permits and licences obtained through local individuals to do business.
He said the issue could not be addressed by a single agency alone and instead required a coordinated effort involving all relevant authorities.
These include the Inland Revenue Board, the Customs Department, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, local authorities, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Immigration Department.
“I want the measures we have proposed to be implemented immediately, with all relevant agencies working together to strengthen enforcement, including monitoring e-commerce activities and ensuring tax compliance.
“BNM and MCMC should examine e-commerce platforms and money trails, including matters related to the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA),” he said.
