PETALING JAYA: Exposure to artificial intelligence (AI) must be expanded to all levels of society, including university students, to ensure that no one is left behind in the face of technological changes, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said various initiatives are in place to introduce the technology to the people, including at the school and community levels.
These efforts are being implemented through the introduction of digital education and AI in schools, which is also expanded at universities, he said.
“We have asked all universities to have an AI department, including at AIMST University.
“Higher learning institutions, including private universities, need to continue to strengthen the field of AI in preparation for future technological developments,” he said at a programme with AIMST University students, Sinar Harian reported.
Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and MIC president Tan Sri Dr SA Vigneswaran, who is also AIMST University chancellor and chairman.
Anwar cited the AI Untuk Rakyat initiative under the Digital Ministry as one of the initiatives with the goal of increasing public understanding of the technology and to narrow the gap between people living in high-earning areas and those who have less access to the technology.
However, the Prime Minister reminded the public that the development of AI needs to be balanced with human values, ethics and justice.
At the event, Anwar presented an annual government grant of RM25mil to the university.
He also announced an additional RM1mil to help its poor students.
“The government will ensure that the poorest students at this university continue to receive guaranteed assistance.
“We will ensure they are not excluded from receiving an education due to financial difficulties,” he said.
Anwar said the government would continue to prioritise education as it is one of the most important elements in shaping the country’s future and for the people to build a better future.
