750 litres of illegally stored petrol seized in Labuan

KOTA KINABALU: An estimate 750 litres of subsidised fuel were seized from an unregistered jetty at Kampung Sungai Keling in Labuan on Wednesday (June 3).

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry officials raided the illegal jetty and found 20 jerrycans and two steel barrels filled with petrol.

The ministry's Labuan branch said in a statement on Thursday (June 4) that the integrated operation, dubbed Ops Tiris 4.0, was carried out at around 2pm and saw a 39-year-old suspect detained.

Its officials said the suspect could not produce any permits authorising the storage of subsidised fuel.

The seized items, valued at RM2,940, were taken back to the ministry office while the suspect will be investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, the statement added.

It said that if charged and convicted, the suspect can be fined up to RM1mil or jailed up to three years, or both, for the first offence.

The ministry said it would conduct more operations to curb leakages of subsidised goods, and urged the public to continue helping it prevent such losses to the country.
