Perlis ruler urges stability, backs Mentri Besar’s leadership

KANGAR: The Raja of Perlis expressed hope that the current Mentri Besar would be allowed to continue leading the state administration until the end of the current term.

In his royal address before opening the 15th Perlis State Legislative Assembly at Kompleks Seri Putra on Wednesday (June 3), Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail said political stability was crucial in maintaining investor confidence and ensuring development plans in the small state proceeded without disruption.

"All honourable members are urged to extend their full and continuous cooperation to the Mentri Besar to ensure the smooth administration of the state and the effective implementation of government policies.

"Any differences of opinion and disputes should be resolved with wisdom, prudence and in a spirit of harmony.

"I hope the Mentri Besar will be allowed to continue leading the state government until the end of the current term without any disruption that could affect plans that have already been put in place," he said.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also reminded elected representatives to place the interests of the people above personal considerations and resolve differences with wisdom and restraint.

The ruler's remarks come amid political tensions within Perikatan Nasional in Perlis following the appointment of Abu Bakar Hamzah as Mentri Besar in December last year.

Last month, Abu Bakar said the state assembly would be dissolved if a vote of no confidence was brought against him, saying he had been entrusted by Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin to lead the state administration.

The Perlis state assembly sitting, originally scheduled to begin on April 21, was later postponed amid the political uncertainty.
