JOHOR BARU: A DAP veteran has tried to distance herself from the talk surrounding Skudai assemblyman Marina Ibrahim’s decision to opt out of the next Johor state election and retire from active politics.
Johor DAP assistant secretary Ng Siam Luang, who was purportedly touted as one of the party’s choice candidates for Skudai, said she does not intend to contest in the polls.
“I know several party branches have nominated me as a candidate, which is the greatest affirmation for me but I want to officially state that I do not wish to contest,” she said in a Facebook post on Monday (June 1).
Ng, who is also Iskandar Puteri MP Liew Chin Tong's special officer, said as a party member for the past 20 years, she has assisted MPs and assemblymen from her party in handling constituency matters.
“No matter which candidate the central and state DAP leadership fields, we will support them fully and serve alongside them,” she added.
On Sunday (May 31), Marina announced that she would not contest in the widely speculated upcoming state election and would step away from active politics after four years as the Skudai assemblyman.
A letter purportedly written by Marina to state DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching, declining an offer to contest the Tiram state seat, later made the rounds on social media.
The letter stated that she had declined Teo’s offer to contest the seat, as well as an offer of a government-linked company position if she failed to win.
Speculation surfaced claiming that the move to field Marina in a different seat was to give way to Ng as the next candidate.
