Press vital in defending accuracy and credibility, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: Journalists must remain on the front line in defending the integrity of information at a time when slander can spread instantly and perception often outweighs reality, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic).

He said every report requires careful scrutiny, verification and a strong sense of responsibility, as public trust is not easily earned but built on honesty, transparency and consistent commitment.

“The role of journalists is not confined to recording events, but also as an important voice in upholding the truth when society is confronted with confusion and speculation,” Fahmi said in a Facebook post in conjunction with National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) yesterday, Bernama reported.

“When integrity is upheld as a guiding principle and truth is placed as the highest priority, journalists will continue to stand as a bulwark of credible information. Ultimately, journalism is not only about reporting the news, but about preserving trust and safeguarding credibility.”

Fahmi said this year’s Hawana celebration was being held amid growing concerns among media practitioners over job security and the future of the industry.

“This year, we are celebrating Journalists’ Day in an atmosphere where many may be worried about their jobs and future due to AI and economic challenges. But God willing, on the government’s part, especially through the Communications Ministry, several matters are being looked into to assist friends in the media industry,” he said.

Fahmi also stressed that a free and ethical media forms the cornerstone of the country’s democratic system.

With the theme “Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility”, the highlight of the Hawana 2026 celebration will take place at the PICCA Convention Centre @ Butterworth Arena in Penang on June 20 and is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
