Lemang seller sees 50-fold increase in sales

BUSINESS is booming for a lemang seller in Sik, Kedah, as she sold over 4,000 sticks of the popular coconut milk-infused glutinous rice delicacy during Hari Raya Aidiladha, reported Kosmo!.

Hamidah Mat Zain said her lemang business, named Lemang Kak Ruby, typically only sells about 80 sticks daily but it has so far saw a 50-fold increase in sales this festive season.

Located in Kampung Charok Pelanduk, Hamidah said she had to ramp up her lemang production due to overwhelming demand.

“Demand for lemang during the festive season remains high because my outlet is well-known in the district.

“I have been told by my customers that my lemang is especially rich and creamy, probably due to the fresh coconut milk.”

Having inherited the business from her late mother, Hamidah said she sells lemang in various flavours and sizes, starting from just RM10.

While her white and black glutinous rice lemang are the most popular, she also offers lemang in unique flavours like corn, cassava and brown sugar.

She added that she typically operates her stall until midnight during festive seasons where she can easily sell 10,000 sticks of lemang in a month.

“I have many customers who were on their way back to their hometowns such as Kelantan stopping to buy my lemang.”
