Close brush with jaws of death

PORT DICKSON: A fisherman narrowly survived a crocodile attack at a river jetty near here.

Negri Sembilan police chief Dep Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the incident occurred at about 4am yesterday just after the 62-year-old victim cast his fishing net into the river.

“The fisherman was standing on the riverbank when the reptile suddenly lunged at him, dragging him into the river,” he said.

DCP Alzafny said the fisherman held on tightly to a rock and eventually managed to break free from the crocodile’s jaws.

He was hospitalised for a broken left ankle, a fractured toe and multiple lacerations on both legs, and will undergo surgery.

DCP Alzafny said the Wildlife and National Parks Department was investigating the incident.

He advised the public to avoid activities near river estuaries and known crocodile habitats between dusk and dawn, when the reptiles are most active.
