JOHOR BARU: Teenagers caught littering will be brought to court, where they could be sentenced to community service orders (CSO), says Aiman Athirah Sabu.
The Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister said that despite being minors, they could still face legal action, but the implementation of their CSO would be carried out in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
"A total of 15 teenagers aged 16 to 18 will be brought to court soon for littering-related offences, with most of the cases taking place in Kuala Lumpur.
"We do not provide exemptions in enforcement. Even if they are children, they could still be brought to court,” she said when attending the Sinergi Kasih Madani programme at the Desa Mutiara People's Housing Programme in Tebrau here on Saturday (May 16).
She added that the ministry has informed the Education Ministry to help spread awareness on cleanliness and anti-littering practices in schools nationwide.
On enforcement efforts, Aiman Athirah said authorities have taken action against more than 6,680 offenders since January.
She added that more than 280 offenders have already been charged in court while 158 had completed their CSO punishments.
She also welcomed public cooperation in reporting littering offences through CCTV footage and social media evidence to help authorities identify offenders and issue notices.
