Sabah Forestry Dept hails eco-tourism firm's conservation commitment

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Forestry Department welcomes Sawit Kinabalu Group's (SKG) continued commitment to conservation initiatives and hopes to explore more areas of cooperation in the future.

Chief conservator of forests Datuk Zulkifli Suara also expressed his appreciation for the ongoing collaboration with state-owned SKG and its subsidiary, eco-tourism company SK Green Services and Tours SDn Bhd (SK Green).

This commitment was underscored during a recent courtesy call on Zulkifli by SK Green officials, who discussed strengthening cooperation in conservation and sustainable landscape management.

"This meeting reflected the long-standing collaboration between the Forestry Department and SKG, particularly in the establishment and development of the 2,632ha Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA)," SK Green senior manager Charis Saliun said.

Initiated in 2017, SPnCA was voluntarily set aside by SKG within its plantation landscape as a conservation zone aimed at protecting river ecosystems, preserving wildlife habitats and maintaining biodiversity in the area.

Charis said the collaboration with the Sabah Forestry Department has played an important role in supporting conservation and eco-tourism efforts at SPnCA, while promoting greater environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

Separately, SPnCA also received a visit from Ambassador of Switzerland to Malaysia Chantal Moser and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) resident representative to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, Edward Vrkic.

The delegation was received by SK Green and the Sustainability Division of Sawit Kinabalu Group during their visit to the conservation site.

The visit was held in conjunction with engagements related to the Sabah Jurisdictional Approach for Palm Oil and provided the delegation with insights into biodiversity conservation and sustainability initiatives at SPnCA.

The visit included a closer look at the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife habitats within the conservation area.
