Father's love inspires teacher to develop special needs methods

IPOH: Having a son with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) symptoms prompted Dr Velerie Wheelervon Primus, 37, to transition into special education to help his only child and others like him.

His determination led to the creation of several specialised learning frameworks, namely Hope, Miracles, and Neuro Arts, specifically tailored for students with special needs.

These learning methods have made a big difference. For example, at the start of 2025, one of his autistic students went from using a wheelchair to running and playing football.

Because of his dedication, the teacher from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bingkor, Keningau, received the Education Minister’s Special Award at the 2026 Teachers' Day Awards ceremony, part of the 55th National Teachers' Day celebration here on Friday (May 15).

"My son, Nogah, is now 11. I have been in education for 13 years, starting as a physical education teacher before moving to arts and culture. When my son was diagnosed with autism in 2020, I shifted my focus to special education.

"I combined my experience in these three fields to develop these approaches, including Neuro Arts, which I launched early this year,” he told reporters at the ceremony.

Velerie described the recognition today as deeply meaningful, viewing it as an acknowledgement of the perseverance and sacrifices made throughout his journey in the classroom.

He explained that the 'Hope' approach focuses on intervention involving schools and parents, while 'Miracles' brings occupational therapy into teaching and learning (PdP).

'Neuro Arts' combines neurology, science, and occupational therapy through PdP sessions.

Velerie, from the interior of Keningau, said his passion for teaching began when he was a child. He wanted to help improve access to and quality of education for future generations.

Alongside Velerie, 94 other teachers nationwide were honoured across 31 categories. Recipients received Bank Simpanan Nasional Premium Savings Certificates, certificates and souvenirs, in recognition of their contributions to education.

Ipoh is the centre of attention for the teaching fraternity this year, hosting the two-day 55th National Teachers' Day celebration.

This year’s theme, "Guru Bitara Nadi Negara” (Exceptional Teachers, the Nation’s Pulse), underscores the pivotal role of educators in moulding high-quality human capital, forming the backbone of the nation's economy and social stability.

The highlight of the celebration will be tomorrow's official opening ceremony by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.- Bernama
