Training aircraft forced to land at Langkawi stadium, no injuries reported

LANGKAWI: A training aircraft conducting routine flight exercises from the Langkawi International Training Air Base (LTAB) was forced to make an emergency landing at the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) Stadium here after experiencing engine power issues on Tuesday (May 12).

Both the pilot and trainee pilot of the aircraft, however, did not suffer any physical injuries.

Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Khairul Azhar Nuruddin said initial investigations found that the pilot had conducted a first training session with the aircraft at 8.30am, which concluded at 9.30am.

The aircraft then departed for a second training flight at 9.40am.

"At about 10.20am, while flying in Kuah airspace, the pilot detected a reduction in engine power. He immediately informed air traffic control and initiated procedures to identify a suitable emergency landing site," he said in a statement Tuesday.

He said inspections indicated that the aircraft’s front landing gear was damaged upon touchdown.

ACP Khairul said a team from the Transport Ministry has since been deployed to the site to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the incident.
