JOHOR BARU: Improvements are being made to the Safe School Management Guidelines to address current challenges and ensure continued protection for students and school staff, says Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek (pic).

She said this effort has already been initiated through the Education Institution Safety Reform Committee, which includes representatives from various parties, including the police and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh).

“Various representatives from NGOs and members of the community are also a part of the committee to ensure that issues related to school safety are given attention,” she said at the launching ceremony of the national-level MyLesen B2 Sekolah (MyB2S) 2026 here yesterday, Bernama reported.

Also present were Transport Minister Anthony Loke as well as Road Transport Department director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli.

The issue of safety in schools has become a key concern for the public following several recent incidents.

On April 12, a Form One student was killed when struck by a car in front of the girls’ surau at SMK Tanjong Mas in Kota Baru, Kelantan.

In Johor, a Year Two schoolgirl died after being hit by a van in front of the main gate of SK Seri Maimon, Parit Sulong in Batu Pahat on May 5.

In a press conference, Fadhlina said that her ministry has also directed all principals and school administrators to take safety measures strictly and consistently daily.

She said there is no compromise on student safety issues, and all parties must play a role in ensuring that the school environment is always safe.

She added that the implementation of safety programmes and initiatives yesterday is part of the follow-up actions resulting from the discussions of the special committee that thoroughly examined student safety issues.

Fadhlina also said the government is drafting the MyLesen B2 and MyB2S programme to ensure that students who ride motorcycles to school have valid licences.

The Transport Ministry, through the JPJ, aims for 60,000 students to benefit from the special MyB2S 2026 programme, involving an allocation of about RM18.5mil.
