My remarks taken out of context, govt has no plans to reduce Budi95 fuel quota, says Liew

PETALING JAYA: Liew Chin Tong denies saying that the monthly quota of subsided Budi Madani RON95 (Budi95) fuel, priced at RM1.99 per litre, may be reduced to by 50 litres to help the government conserve fuel supply.

Earlier, a news outlet had quoted the Deputy Finance Minister as saying that Malaysia might cut the quota from 200 litres to 150 litres, citing data that most vehicle users consume less than 200 litres a month, during a fireside chat at a bank event.

“It’s unfortunate that what I said was taken out of context,” he said in a social media post on Tuesday (May 12).

“What I said is that the Budi95 mechanism is a good tool as it provides us with data to understand the travel patterns of Malaysians.

“The top priority of the government and everyone in society is to ensure that we have a sufficient supply for as long as possible.

“As a society, we must ensure that we have petrol supply for the longest time, and at some point we should build consensus to support the effort to reduce fuel consumption.

“ I regret that my comments have caused a media storm and I hope all would consider the full context of what I said,” he added.
