KUALA LUMPUR: Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has described the increase in allocation for the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) as a significant milestone in its history.
This follows the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of an additional RM50mil for Mitra, bringing the total allocation for 2026 to RM150mil.
“I would like to thank the Prime Minister for the additional RM50mil. For more than 20 years, the allocation remained at RM100mil.
“So this is something we must record in history,” he told reporters after a meet-and-greet session with Indian undergraduates at Universiti Malaya on Sunday (May 10).
Ramanan said Mitra had demonstrated strong implementation capacity, with near-full utilisation of its allocations in recent years.
“In 2023, Mitra fully utilised the RM100mil allocation, and in 2024 we achieved almost 99 per cent utilisation.
“For 2025, our programmes have already been planned, and implementation is ongoing, and we are also close to fully utilising the RM100mil allocation available,” he said.
Meanwhile, in his speech earlier, Ramanan said Mitra would focus on holistic educational development, covering preschool, primary, secondary and tertiary education, including high-level technical training.
He said this includes efforts to strengthen the Indian community’s education ecosystem to make it more inclusive and competitive.
“In this regard, Mitra will work with strategic partners to ensure that educational programmes are implemented in an orderly manner and are long-term in nature,” he said.
