Police quiz 49 in 3R probe over political crisis in NS


SEREMBAN: Police have recorded statements from 49 individuals as part of ongoing investigations into sensitive issues involving race, religion and royalty (3R) following the Negri Sembilan political crisis.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the probe was focused on several social media posts and statements being circulated and deemed seditious, defamatory and which touched on 3R issues.

He said in a statement that the investigations are being conducted under multiple laws.

“Upon completion, the investigation papers will be referred to the state prosecution for further instructions.”

DCP Alzafny said the investigations are being carried out under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act for committing seditious acts, Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and 505(B) for publishing or circulating any statement which can cause fear or alarm to the public.

Offenders convicted under the Sedition Act can be fined up to RM5,000 or jailed up to three years.

For offences under Section 500 and 505(B), offenders can be imprisoned up to two years or fined or both.

The cases are also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities or network services for the dissemination of obscene, false, threatening or offensive content.

Offenders face a fine of not more than RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years or both.

“The police would like to remind the public not to make any statements or share content that could cause provocation, disturb public peace or which touch on 3R issues.”
