DNA and satellites to protect sea turtles

KOTA KINABALU: A new sea turtle conservation project has been launched in Semporna through a partnership between Sabah Wildlife Department, WWF-Malaysia and Mataking Reef Resort.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said the project is the first of its kind in the region.

It focuses on protecting the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle by introducing two cutting edge tools – the ShellBank and satellite tracking.

The ShellBank involves a global DNA database that can trace turtles – alive or dead – back to their original population.

It can also help fight illegal trade and improve conservation planning, according to a joint statement yesterday.

Satellite tracking devices will be used to follow turtles on their migration routes and feeding area.

It will provide data to help identify important habitats to protect.

WWF-Malaysia senior director Tay Mooi Geok hopes the project will give information on where Hawksbill turtle go after nesting and assist in conservation efforts.
