MetMalaysia: Thunderstorms, heavy rain nationwide until 6pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds for 13 states, effective until 6pm on Thursday (May 7).

The adverse waether conditions are expected over the northern states of Kedah (Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu), Perlis, Penang and Perak.

The warning also covers east coast states of Kelantan (Pasir Mas, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai), Terengganu (Besut and Hulu Terengganu) and Pahang (Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran, Bera and Rompin).

Residents in Selangor (Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Petaling and Kuala Langat), Negeri Sembilan (Tampin), Melaka and Johor are also advised to prepare for the severe weather conditions.

Additionally, the alert also extends to Sabah: Interior (Beaufort), West Coast (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud) and Kudat (Kota Marudu).

In Sarawak, the affected areas include Kapit (Belaga) and Bintulu (Sebauh).

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
