KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to expedite the implementation of cloud-seeding operations in states that are at a critical level, particularly Kedah and Perlis.
He said the move is an urgent necessity in facing the current weather situation, and also suggested the use of drone technology to overcome logistical constraints so that the operation can be carried out smoothly.
“I have instructed MetMalaysia to speed up its implementation, including exploring the use of drone technology and co-operation with various parties to make up for the shortage of suitable aircraft, to ensure the wellbeing of the people continues to be safeguarded,” he said in a Facebook post Monday (May 4).
Earlier, Anwar held a meeting with the top management of the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry to examine the ministry’s policy planning and priorities for this year.
Besides weather-related issues, the meeting also discussed matters related to the welfare of three elephants owned by Malaysia — Dara, Amoi and Kelat — which are currently in Japan.
He said the welfare of the animals must be a priority for the ministry and Taiping Zoo, and called for transparency of information to the public.
“Any decision and action must be carried out based on facts and take into account the best welfare of Dara, Amoi and Kelat. Transparent and fact-based information must be provided continuously so that the public can obtain a clear picture of their condition there,” he said.
The placement of the three Malaysian-owned elephants in Japan has sparked heated debate following claims about their welfare, which was alleged to be below an appropriate level, drawing various reactions among Malaysians.
The matter was raised by a Malaysian who shared his experience after visiting Tennoji Zoo in Japan, and seeing the condition of the three elephants, which were reported to be housed in a hot and dry environment, lacking sufficient natural elements such as greenery.
Meanwhile, Anwar also reminded the the ministry on the importance of effective management and governance.
“Concluding the meeting, I stressed the importance of quality governance, strong integrity and zero tolerance for leakages. This is the foundation of our efforts in building a Malaysia that is inclusive, prosperous and sustainable,” he said. — Bernama
