Man gets three months' jail, RM5,000 fine for offensive post against the King


BANGI: A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment and fined RM5,000 by the Bandar Baru Bangi Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to an offensive social media post insulting the King, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim.

Judge Firdaus Md Isa handed down the sentence against Mohd Hafiz Haron, ordering him to serve the jail term from on Tuesday (May 5).

Additionally, the court ordered that he serve four months' imprisonment if he fails to pay the RM5,000 fine.

The accused was charged with knowingly making and transmitting grossly offensive comments with the intent to annoy any person via TikTok at 7.30am on Sept 11, 2025.

The post was viewed by a complainant in Taman Pelangi Semenyih 2 at 10pm on the same day and subsequently filed a police report. Three other individuals also filed similar reports.

The charge was brought under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000 or a maximum imprisonment term of two years, or both and a further fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence persists after conviction.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nurul Atiqah Mohamad Alias sought a commensurate sentence as a lesson to the offender.

Mohd Hafiz, who was unrepresented, appealed for a light sentence on the grounds that he works in his village to support his ailing mother and three children.

On Sept 13, 2025, police arrested him to assist in an investigation over viral video containing seditious elements and insulting the King.

Checks revealed that he had a record of three crimes, one related to narcotics. – Bernama
