Newborn baby girl found wrapped in cloth at Semporna oil palm plantation

KOTA KINABALU: A newborn baby girl was found wrapped in cloth with her umbilical cord still attached at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Lihak-Lihak, Semporna.

Semporna OCPD Supt Tan Hiap Wah said the baby was taken to Semporna Hospital for treatment.

“Medical examination confirmed that she had no injuries and was in stable condition,” Supt. Tan said in a statement Sunday (May 3).

He said that police had received a report from a member of the public at 1.07am April 25 regarding the discovery.

The baby had actually been found at 7.30pm on April 24 and handed over to the village head before being taken to the Lihak-Lihak police post for further action.

He said after receiving medical care, the baby was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code (concealment of birth with intent to abandon a child), which carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Police are appealing to the public with information related to the case to contact the Investigating Officer, Inspector Mohammad Hafizudin Akram Ghafar bin Ismail, at 013-7557293, or approach any nearby police station.
