KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has recorded 13,954 new members through its online registration platform since its launch on April 20, reflecting strong and growing interest, particularly among young people, said Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (pic).
The party’s secretary-general said the Youth wing accounted for the highest number of new registrations at 8,233, followed by Puteri with 1,260 and Women with 1,240.
In terms of geographical distribution, Johor recorded the highest number of new members, followed by Pahang and Perak, he said.
“The numbers are increasing almost daily, reflecting our president’s (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) intention to ensure that the process of joining Umno is no longer burdensome, especially for the younger generation.
“It is also a game changer introduced by the president, who clearly understands the aspirations and sentiments of young people today,” he said.
Asyraf said this in his keynote address at Umno’s 80th-anniversary celebration at the World Trade Centre on Saturday (May 2).
Touching on the broader meaning of Umno’s political struggle, Asyraf reminded members that while the party’s journey would not always be easy, it must remain true to its mission and struggle.
He reiterated that the party’s core mission remains unchanged, including safeguarding Islam, upholding the dignity of the Malays, and ensuring that Malaysia continues to prosper as a stable, multiracial nation.
“Umno is a struggle. Its path is thorny, but believe that this is a sacred party.
“Our intention is clear, which is to safeguard our religion, to uphold our people, and to ensure that our multiracial nation remains prosperous and sovereign,” he said.
