Vehicle travel allowances revised

Uncertain times: The revised allowance will be revised on an interim basis, subject to review when the price of RON95 fuel stabilises.

PETALING JAYA: The government has temporarily revised the vehicle travel allowances for public officers who are on official duty, including the police, in line with rising fuel prices.

Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican said the revision was in line with the developments in the Middle East conflict, which have led to a hike and volatility in global fuel prices.

This, he said, had a direct impact on petrol costs in Malaysia.

“The revised vehicle transport allowance rates will take effect from May 1 (for claims relating to April 2026) and will be implemented on an interim basis, subject to review when the price of unsubsidised RON95 fuel stabilises at pre-conflict levels,” he said in a circular dated April 20.

The rates for the first 500km for cars have been increased from 90 sen to RM1 (per km) while for motorcycles, the rates have been increased from 60 sen to 65 sen.

As for journey involving 501km and above, the rates for cars have been increased to 90 sen and 55 sen for motorcycles.

Heads of departments were reminded to ensure prudent expenditure under the current approved operating budget to optimise government spending.
