Tawau babysitter arrested over alleged abuse of one-year-old


Police officers questioning a 57-year-old woman in Tawau following her arrest over the alleged abuse of a toddler in Taman Semarak.

TAWAU: A 57-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly abusing a one-year-old girl in an incident at Taman Semarak here last Thursday (April 23).

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the child’s mother lodged a police report.

“The complainant claimed she saw the suspect behaving inappropriately towards the child while she was at work, and the CCTV recording also showed several acts believed to have taken place while the child was under the suspect’s care,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (April 28).

The suspect, who had been hired as a babysitter for RM450 a month for about a year, was said to be known to and trusted by the victim’s family.

Following the report lodged on Sunday (April 27), a team from the district Criminal Investigation Department, together with personnel from the Bombalai police station, arrested the suspect at about 3.45pm in Kampung Pangkalan Asli, Merotai Besar.

She has been taken to the Tawau district police headquarters for further investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse.

Police said investigations are ongoing.
