Govt to expand Nadi centres with telemedicine, AI health screening services

PUTRAJAYA: The government plans to expand the role of National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi) nationwide, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

According to the Communications Minister, this would include introducing telemedicine services and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered health screening tools to improve access to healthcare in underserved areas.

He said the initiative was not new, adding that an early module had been presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as far back as November 2023, but efforts were now being intensified and broadened.

“We have already started and will further scale up and expand these efforts,” he said during a press conference here on Monday (June 15).

Fahmi cited the example of a Nadi centre in Semporna, Sabah, which could be equipped with telemedicine facilities and basic health screening services, including blood sugar and blood pressure checks.

This, he said, would allow residents to undergo preliminary health assessments without having to travel to the mainland.

He added that several parties collaborating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had also introduced new AI-enabled devices capable of analysing retinal scans and providing basic assessments of an individual’s overall health.

“Many of these initiatives have already been implemented and we are working to expand them further,” he said.
