Cops smash money laundering op in Ampang, 10 foreigners nabbed

SHAH ALAM: Police have busted a money laundering operation during a raid in Ampang that led to the arrest of 10 people.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the raid was conducted in Taman Ampang Utama on April 14.

The raid saw the arrest of 10 foreigners, including two women, which police believe had been handling proceeds that came from profits from scam operations.

"Initial investigations found that the syndicate had been operating since January 2026. Nine of the suspects were found to had acted as ‘operators’ managing incoming funds from overseas, including countries such as the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and India.

"All financial transactions were conducted via the Telegram platform, and the funds were then converted into cryptocurrency (USDT) before being returned to the original owners,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday (April 28).

All suspects were aged between 23 and 41 years old, he added.

The police also seized 15 phones and four laptops.

The suspects have been remanded until May 1 under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

In a separate case, police detained eight locals during a  raid at a home in Petaling Jaya.

The suspects were believed to have been handling and converting funds that had been proceeds of fraud and had been in operation since December 2025.

"All suspects acted as ‘account managers’, managing money transfer transactions between first-layer bank accounts and up to fourth-layer bank accounts involving nine local bank accounts.

"It is believed that all funds received and transferred were proceeds of fraudulent activities,” he said.
