Viral travel scam suspect linked to multiple cases arrested

SHAH ALAM: A man known as “Imran Koyube”, who is believed to be linked to a viral travel scam involving multiple identities and alleged fraud, has been arrested, says Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar.

He said the suspect is believed to be linked to cases in several other states.

“We are collaborating with the respective police contingents.

“The suspect has been remanded until Tuesday [tomorrow],” he told reporters after the “Run With Royalty” event yesterday.

The run was flagged off by Selangor Raja Muda Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who also took part in the event.

In another case, Comm Shazeli said police have recorded the statement of an individual linked to alleged defamatory remarks against the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais), with investigation papers already referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) for further action.

He said the individual involved had been called in and his statement recorded to assist investigations, adding that the person is believed to be linked to an active non-governmental organisation (NGO).

Meanwhile, in a separate case, Comm Shazeli said the police have detained a 46-year-old man yesterday for allegedly objecting to the call to prayer (azan) and Friday prayers at a surau in Taman Seraya, Ampang, following several police reports lodged by members of the surau committee.

“We seized several items, including a laptop, a mobile phone and several documents.

“We are investigating the case under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with the suspect placed on a special watchlist,” he added.

Comm Shazeli also reminded the public to exercise caution when making statements or sharing content that could touch on sensitivities or breach the law.

Earlier, the committee of a surau lodged a report at the Pandan Indah police station following allegations that certain parties had raised objections to the management of the place of worship, including the call to prayer (azan), congregational prayers and the use of the surau’s outdoor space.

Among the issues that caused tension were claims that the call to prayer was disturbing them, as well as requests for congregational prayers to be stopped on the grounds that it allegedly caused congestion.
