Ipoh cops nab man over viral cable theft case


IPOH: Police have detained a local man in Tambun near here to assist investigations into the theft of telecommunications cables at Jalan Raja Musa Aziz here, a case that recently went viral on social media.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Najib Hamzah said the 36-year-old suspect was arrested at noon Friday (April 24), and police also seized a vehicle and several items believed to have been used during the incident.

He said investigations found the suspect had previously been arrested on April 21 and charged in court the following day under related legal provisions, but is believed to have continued carrying out similar crimes leading to the latest incident.

"Initial investigations found the suspect admitted involvement with two other accomplices who are still at large, while preliminary screening also found him positive for drugs," he said in a statement Saturday (April 25).

The suspect has been remanded for three days until April 27 to assist investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code and related provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, while efforts to trace the other suspects are ongoing. - Bernama
