Miri MP urges residents avoid open burning

MIRI: Residents in the district are urged to avoid open burning during the ongoing hot, dry weather, which has contributed to recurring bushfires across the district.

Miri MP Chiew Choon Man said in a statement on Wednesday (April 22) that the problem had recurred across Miri district in recent weeks.

“This has placed a very heavy burden on the Fire and Rescue Department,” he said. He said personnel had responded continuously, sometimes to the same or nearby locations.

Chiew said relevant agencies would monitor air quality and take action as the situation developed.

He said he had provided equipment to support firefighting efforts and contributed to the firefighters’ welfare fund. He also said he had contacted Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming to request additional manpower, funding and other support for firefighters as an interim measure.
