MACC: Public donations, not zakat, involved in RM230mil NGO case

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that a misappropriation case involving about RM230mil linked to a non-governmental organisation (NGO) concerns public donations, not zakat funds.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said investigations found that the NGO received contributions from various sources, including commissions from certain collections, intended for those in need.

"The funds did not reach their intended beneficiaries. Instead, some individuals allegedly diverted the money for personal use, including the purchase of luxury assets," he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 22).

Azam added that investigations are ongoing, with the MACC expanding the scope of the probe to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the process, in line with the principles of integrity and good governance.

Earlier, two men, including an NGO deputy chairman, aged in their 50s and 60s, were remanded for four days until April 25 to assist in the investigation.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Ameera Mastura Khamis following an application by the MACC at the Shah Alam Magistrate's Court this morning.

Both suspects were arrested yesterday on suspicion of misappropriating about RM230mil in NGO funds. – Bernama
