Fuel to Australia does not originate from Malaysia, says Fahmi


PUTRAJAYA: The 200 million litres of diesel reportedly headed to Australia, does not originate from Malaysia, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

According to Fahmi, the fuel shipment reported by Australian media was part of a commercial arrangement involving British Petroleum (BP), which operates a storage facility in Malaysian waters.

“Checks with the National Economic Action Council communications command centre and several parties have confirmed that it is not Malaysian diesel.

“Australia has a trade contract with BP, which has a depot in Malaysian waters.

“While the ship transporting the diesel will depart from Malaysia, the fuel itself is not Malaysian,” he said on Wednesday (April 22).

On Wednesday (April 22), Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was quoted as saying that an extra 200 million litres of diesel was headed for Australia.

He said it consisted of two cargoes, one from South Korea and another from Brunei.

Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen had said the extra fuel would arrive in Australia by the last week of May or the first week of June.
