Engineer loses nearly RM28,000 to online sex scam

KUALA LUMPUR: An engineer lost RM27,580 after being scammed by a syndicate offering online sex services through the TikTok app on Friday (April 17).

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Hoo Chang Hook said the 28-year-old male victim was browsing the app at his home in Bangsar at 8.22am when he clicked on a link connected to the WhatsApp app.

"The victim was then offered the package and began dealing with several agents via three different phone numbers before making 22 transactions to six different accounts with a total payment of RM27,580," he said in a statement Tuesday (April 21).

Hoo said initial investigations found that the victim was also threatened with charges if he cancelled the booking and that it would be circulated on social media if he refused to follow the instructions of the syndicate agent.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and that his department had detected several reports involving the same modus operandi recently.

In this regard, ACP Hoo advised the public not to engage in immoral activities by subscribing to online sex services because, apart from violating the law under Section 372B of the Penal Code, they are also at high risk of becoming victims of fraud. - Bernama
