Cabinet ready for further pay cuts if Middle East crisis worsens, says Fahmi


KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet remains prepared for any further pay cuts if the Middle East crisis worsens, says government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

“Personally, I am ready to accept any directive from the Prime Minister.

“In fact, since day one (of going into office), ministers’ salaries have already been reduced.

“We have discussed it before, but it is ultimately up to the Prime Minister what he wants us to implement,” he said on Saturday (April 18).

On Friday (April 17), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Putrajaya is prepared to consider ministerial pay cuts if the Middle East crisis worsens.

However, the Prime Minister noted that ministers’ salaries are already relatively low.

In 2022, the Cabinet agreed to a 20% pay cut until Malaysia achieves economic recovery.

Anwar had previously said the cut was part of a gesture acknowledging the tough times many have faced
