Over 220,000 foreigners opt for repatriation programme, says Immigration


PUTRAJAYA: More than 220,000 foreigners have signed up for the Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0, says Datuk Zakaria Shaaban (pic).

The Immigration director-general said the programme, which started on May 19 last year, has resulted in 228,961 foreigners signing up so far.

"Of the total, 204,523 foreigners have been successfully repatriated.

"We have collected some RM114.5mil in fees for the programme," he told a press conference on Wednesday (April 15).

Zakaria said foreigners from Indonesia and Bangladesh are among those who tops the list for th programme.

"The programme is expected to run until April 30.

"Based on the response so far, we hope it can be extended," he said.

The programme is a voluntary amnesty initiative that allows undocumented migrants to return to their home countries without facing prosecution.

The programme does not apply to individuals who registered under earlier repatriation initiatives but failed to leave the country, those who have been blacklisted by the department, or individuals wanted by the authorities.
