Manjung cops nab four for stealing power to run crypto mining rigs


IPOH: Four individuals have been arrested following raids on four premises using stolen electricity to operate cryptocurrency mining machines in Manjung, Perak.

Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the arrests were made after police received information and conducted a joint operation with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on Tuesday (April 14).

"A total of 46 cryptocurrency mining machines were seized," he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 15).

He said the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990.

If convicted, offenders may face a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both.

ACP Hasbullah said 38 raids in collaboration with TNB have been carried out so far, resulting in the seizure of 487 cryptocurrency mining machines and nine people arrested.

"Property owners are advised to monitor activities of tenants to ensure they are not involved in such operations" he said.
