Seven in 10 Malaysian workers happy but burnout remains high, says Jobstreet

PETALING JAYA: Seven in 10 Malaysian workers say they are happy at work, although stress and burnout remain persistent concerns, according to online employment marketplace Jobstreet.

The Workplace Happiness Index found that 70% of workers in Malaysia feel happy at work, which the platform described as encouraging despite a significant group feeling disengaged or unsupported.

"While salary remains important, what truly sustains happiness is purpose," it said in a statement on Monday (April 13).

The report, based on responses from about 1,000 individuals aged 18 to 64, noted that while 68% find their jobs fulfilling, only 36% are satisfied with their stress levels.

Furthermore, 41% of respondents reported feeling burnt out or exhausted.

The findings indicate that workplace happiness is often driven by fundamentals such as the work environment, colleagues and daily responsibilities. However, three in 10 workers remain either unhappy or neutral about their jobs.

Among those who are unhappy, 71% said a better work-life balance would improve their wellbeing, second only to higher pay. This highlights the impact of unmanaged stress on productivity and long-term outcomes.

Jobstreet managing director Nicholas Lam said workplace happiness in Malaysia is a shared responsibility.

"When employers invest in purpose-driven roles, supportive cultures and listen to the diverse needs of their workforce, the impact is tangible, translating to higher engagement, productivity and retention," he said.

The report noted that a sense of purpose plays a key role, with 64% of workers saying they are satisfied with the purpose they find in their work.

Happiness levels also varied across generations, with younger workers reporting higher stress levels. Industry differences persisted, with sectors such as professional services and construction recording higher satisfaction compared to retail and the public sector.
