Two women killed, five injured in Lahad Datu pile-up involving an excavator

KOTA KINABALU: Two women were killed and five people injured in a five-vehicle collision at Batu 8, Jalan Silam in Lahad Datu.

The accident, which occurred around 4.30pm on Saturday (April 11), involved a lorry, an excavator, two cars and a motorcycle.

Lahad Datu deputy district police chief Supt Jimmy Panyau said on Sunday that initial investigations showed a car driven by a 21-year-old woman lost control.

The vehicle veered into the opposite lane and collided with a lorry.

"The impact triggered a chain reaction, causing the lorry to hit another car and a motorcycle, while the woman’s car hit an excavator at the Pan Borneo road construction site," he said.

He said the woman died on the spot, while another 35-year-old woman in the front passenger seat died on her way to the Lahad Datu hospital.

An adult male and three children in the car, as well as the motorcyclist, were rushed to the hospital by members of the public before rescue teams arrived.

Others from the second car with three people, the excavator driver and the lorry driver escaped without any serious injuries.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
