Consumers urged to adopt Time of Use scheme to save on electricity bills

PETALING JAYA: The government is encouraging consumers to switch to the Time of Use (ToU) scheme to save on electricity bills and manage living costs.

The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry said in a statement that the scheme is a practical step to manage household costs while supporting the national energy efficiency agenda.

"In an atmosphere of global energy price uncertainty, this is an important and wise move.

"ToU allows users to enjoy lower electricity tariffs during non-peak hours, allowing savings through daily usage patterns," it said on Friday (April 10).

"During peak hours, there is high demand for electricity, especially from 2pm to 10pm, with higher tariffs.

"During off-peak hours, the demand is lower from night to day, weekends and public holidays, with lower tariffs.

"This difference in rates gives users an incentive to plan their electricity usage efficiently," it added.

The ministry said that through ToU, users can optimise electricity usage by diverting energy-intensive activities such as the use of air conditioners, washing machines and water heaters, and charging electric vehicles, to off-peak hours.

"This approach not only helps reduce electricity bills, but also contributes to efficient and sustainable energy use," it added.

The ministry also said that 128,868 users had switched to ToU up to February, reflecting an increased awareness of efficient energy management.

"The public is encouraged to consider transitioning to ToU to take advantage of the flexible tariff structure and make energy use a wiser daily practice," it said, adding that the government would continue to spread awareness of ToU's benefits.

"This approach is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani which emphasises the welfare of the people, resource sustainability and efficiency in governance.

"Energy usage in a good way not only helps reduce the cost of living, but also contributes to environmental sustainability and a more balanced development of the country for future generations," it added.
